THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN STUDENTS' UNION AND THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ITS MEMBERS

On the 15th of March, Facts Count conducted its first survey to check some basic presumptions about the University of Ibadan Students' Union and the characteristics of its members. The first survey was carried out through google form platform and most of the variables tested were nominal variables using a closed system of options to specific questions, our questions cover issues on the relevance of the union in the 21st century, to the responsiveness of the union toward student’s plights, what people feel about the new innovation of online survey, what people feel and about decisions made by the student representative council and lastly what people feel is more important in politics?.  The analysis of the data collected would be done under the following headings

  •   THE RELEVANCE OF THE STUDENT UNION
  •   THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL RESOLUTION ON THE BASIC DUES.
  •   THE RESPONSIVENESS OF THE STUDENT UNION
  •   THE WEIGHTIER SCALE BETWEEN STUDENT LEADERSHIP AND STUDENT PARTICIPATION.
  •   THE NEW CUSTODIANS OF THE UNION

THE RELEVANCE OF THE STUDENT UNION

On the 2nd of March 2011, the university of Ibadan student union returned from exile after a decade of its absence. For the past five years since its reinstatement, people have consistently asked “has our union fulfilled the yearnings of its members?” To find answer to this question, Facts Count dedicated a question on its survey to ask, if the student union is still relevant in this age. Below is a pie chat representing the responses given:

Surprisingly a union which has every student both under-graduate and post graduate students of the university Ibadan has its member due to their financial contribution on a yearly bases. Therefore to find a poll that shows that not up to 70% respondent feel the union is relevant is appalling and begs to question what our union stands for. What goals, aims, objective and mission those it tend to serve. How well has it been able to influence the life its members? We at Facts Count feel that it’s high time the union begins to reposition itself and begin to  redefine what we stand for and its impact on its members, because wasting money on frivolity that do not exceed a week is such obtuseness. Thought the current dispensation has tried in the aspect of redefining the union but more needs to be done. For instance a union with its members drawn from aspiring young artist cannot boost of a studio but ca boost  of acquiring millions of naira to bring an external artist or a union that is endowed with galore of  nimble cannot boost of a scholarship scheme to reward excellence but can race funds to reward mediocrity.

THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL RESOLUTION ON THE BASIC DUES.

Over the years the student representative council which is the legislative arm of moribund. Unlike the principle function of legislature which is the making of Laws but budgetary cutting has become the only duty our legislative arm has. But Arogundade’s House has proven to be a different breed. Starting with the Anti-Book of Life Resolution to the SRC resolution on #2000 has the basic dues. Since the SRC is a representation of the people Facts Count then decided to check if the resolution on the basic dues is a representation of the people.

Though the decision enjoyed both wide spread acceptance and resistance, both from the survey we carried out, the decision was just able to scale a little above average. The survey showed that the energy of the SRC could be put into more things and more consultation should be done before decision making.

THE RESPONSIVENESS OF THE STUDENT UNION

Though a larger amount of people feel that the union this relevant, but what do they think about the responsiveness of the union toward to student plight. Therefore has the union fulfilled its primary purpose i.e. to protect students’ rights? Most of the respondents to the survey feel that the union has been fair towards its response to ward student’s plight. Though this survey was done during period whereby a flash protest and a congress was held. Democracy they say is government by the people for the people of people. We have periodic elections, our union executives hail from among the student even when the management get involved, but we have failed to develop proper feedback mechanism that would communicate the yearning of the people which is for the people. Though the SRC is an example of one of this mechanism, a regular congress at least twice in one regime would make people have the feeling that they are part and parcel of the government and easily understand the plight of the people and fix them on time.

THE WEIGHTIER SCALE BETWEEN STUDENT LEADERSHIP AND STUDENT PARTICIPATION.

Facts Count also conducted a survey to know what is important to UITE when it comes to student politics. Therefore a question was put to our respondent about what they consider more important in student politics between

  The Quality of Leadership

  Your Personal Involvement

Facts Count out that an overwhelming amount of respondent of 94% felt what is most important in student politics is qualitative leaders but like the saying goes, “I shall contribute, and in so doing, I will be the gainer”. Though having a good leader is good but if everyone is part and parcel of the system, every individual serve has a watch-dog in his or her own right and understand the activities of the union and he or she can contribute toward it. That if even a leadership of mediocre can put itself on its toes due to the mass base participation. So we finding it appalling that a very large amount of people feel that just need a good leader and not their own right to participate in government. For a government that does not speak the mind of the people is a failed one, but other better government can we have that a government with mass base participation.

THE NEW CUSTODIANS OF THE UNION

No struggle can ever succeed without women participating side with men. An overwhelming surge of female participation has been of the increase. Starting with a female has a serious contender for the post of student union president in the 2012/2013 session. Also the following session, the union produced its first female speaker. Thus bring female to the front burner of student politics. Since then we have had females contesting for Elections at the faculty level and winning. Presently university of Ibadan can boots of having to female faculty presidents. We at Facts Count duff our hat to our mothers, sisters and wives. The level of consciousness has increases so much that their participation in the last congress and flash protest was seriously felt to the exert that Queens Elizabeth II Hall which normally considered moribund politically rallied its rank and file for the congress and protest without much pressure from outside.

CONCLUSION

We must begin to understand that the strength of our union is in each individual member. While the strength of each member is in our collectivity (The Union) that why mass base participations is an indispensable part of our union and we must thrive has much has possible to achieve it. we at Facts Count belief that developing an excellent mechanism for communication between the our leaders and followers is absolutely essential for our development has union.Facts Counts have written about the data it has gathered and analysis, we hope the facts piece will sp eak for themselves.
